IS SEATTLE WEATHER MAKING YOU S.A.D?
By Annie Grimes, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine candidate 2012
Seasonal Affective Disorder comes hand in hand with the dark and dreary fall and winter weather of the Pacific Northwest. Symptoms may include depression, low energy and lack of motivation. Here are a few quick and easy things I do to help fight this seasonal sensation:
- Stay fit and exercise. Staying active during the fall and winter months can be difficult at times. Find a fun indoor way to stay moving in the winter. Yoga, for instance can be soothing and rejuvenating. And it’s inside where it’s warm and cozy. Also see Dr. Murphy’s Vacation Spa Program to keep you going all winter long!
- A morning smoothie to keep energy and mood up.
- Plain Yogurt. Live bacterial cultures keep the digestive system healthy.
- Applesauce. For a little extra fiber.
- Fresh or frozen berries. Antioxidizing power!
- 1 tbsp. Ground Flax Seed. Essential Fatty Acids keep mood stable, encourage blood flow and promote a healthy heart.
- 1 Tbsp. Cod Liver Oil (with yummy orange extracts). More Omega 3 Fatty Acids and a little extra Vitamin D for the lack of sun. It also keeps skin healthy and moisturized to protect you from cold dry weather’s unpopular reptilian look.
- Concentrated green vegetable powder supplies important vitamins and minerals.
- Water as needed to keep your blender happy, too!
- Find spirituality. Whether it’s through seeing the good in the little things, relaxing with friends and family or belonging to an organization. Feeling spiritually connected helps realize our emotional potential.
- Practice deep breathing. An instantaneous way to relax the entire body. A few deep breaths can help ease frustration in holiday traffic or while you are trying to wind down at the end of the day.
OTITIS MEDIA AND TYMPANOSTOMY TUBES, OH MY!
Dr. Tolle B. Murphy, ND
Ear infections are a common occurance in the lives of young parents. The horizontal slant of the eustacian tube in the young child along with allergy-induced mucus and mucosal swelling and infection clogging the drain create a lovely thing called “glue ear.” Being that it is a small space, extra fluid build-up causes a lot of pressure and PAIN! Ear infections that nicely resolve affect two-thirds of children under age two. Another two-thirds of children under age six are plagued with recurrant ear infections, called chronic otitis media. This can be a frustrating trial for the whole family, resulting in prescription after prescription of antibiotics, risks of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, countless trips to the doctor and/or surgical insertion of tympanostomy “ear tubes”. In spite of this dismal cycle that many parents and children struggle through, the research does not show any benefit of these procedures, and are in fact risk factors for continual complications.
So what’s the alternative?
- Address contributing factors to chronic ear infections.
- Remove allergies. This is the culprit in 90% of cases. Identify and remove food allergies though allergy elimination diet. The most common allergens are cow’s milk, wheat, egg white, peanut, corn.
- Address environmental airborn allergies by removing as many as possible. Use a micropore air filter and a filtered vacuum cleaner.
- Use a humidifier. Dry air induces swelling and blockage of eustacian tube drain.
- No horizontal bottle feeding. This leads to introduction of the milk into middle ear and breeds infection.
- Breast feeding as prevention is key!
- Boost immune system.
- Follow up antibiotic prescriptions with high quality pro-biotics.
- Echinacea herbal tincture.
- Thymus glandular extract. Due to the high immune globulin count in breast milk, breast fed babies have 20x larger thymus gland than formula fed infants. Supplement it with thymus to catch up!
HOW TO NOT LET COLD AND FLU CATCH HOLD OF YOU!
Dr. Tolle B. Murphy, ND
Here’s what you already know but might not do… drink plenty of fluids (that’s clear pure water, NOT coffee!), get plenty of rest (get to bed by 10 to take best advantage of peaks in Growth Hormone to repair and rejuvenate your body), eat a healthy diet RICH in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats, and EXERCISE every day.
So, what secret can I let you in on that will give your immune system a suit of armor?
- Neti Pot! Rinses nasal passages with warm salt water and washes away any viruses that may be lurking.
- Kombucha has probiotics to optimize IgA salivary immunity.
- Wellness Formula preventatively.
- Homeopathic Oscillococcinum if flu strikes speeds your way toward cure.
See above. “what you already know, but might not do.” Be well!
